  1. Writing is a skill that gets better with practice, in fact this holds true for any activity. What all do you do to make yourself a better writer? I'm reading constantly, if not books, then on the Internet, and even books these days. Of course in my case lots of practice happens when I'm writing content for my clients. What do you do?

  2. Ah well!I believe that writing gets better with depth in the subject, proper research and coordiantion of the researched material, good organization of ideas, and finally the presentation skill. How do I get it?Whenever I get an assignment that suits my taste, [in both payment and nature of the order]I am sufficiently motivated to do some research on the topic. So this improves that particular piece of work. The more work I get in a similar pattern it really improves with time -this is with regard to specific topics.Generally, I feel that good reading finally results in good writing.I believe in reading only good English ; referring to what many people have said on a particualr topic ,gives us better breadth of vision and a multidimensional perspective. We were taught this in our post graduation and I have found it the best practice.

Read, read, read! I've always felt that's the best way to improve one's vocabulary. Personally, I recommend the complete Sherlock Holmes collection.

  4. Ah! I'm rereading Sherlock Holmes these days (the complete compilation, 2nd part). I read it when I was in 10th and wasn't very comfortable with the language. Last week I also completed "Outliers: The story of success"

I agree the more you read the more you learn, but I believe its classic authors like Dickens,Twain or maybe Dumas who raised the bar for the subsequent generations. Hence I believe there can be nothing better than reading the classics if you really want to hone your skills.

I totally agree, most of my learning is based on reading the classics (Dumas reminds me I never got to complete the count of monte cristo...must find the book) but for professional writing you should also closely pay attention to the contemporary writing styles. Internet is the best source of course.

Writing based on a topic or a subject can be well done only with utmost clear & in depth knowledge on the topic. A person can be a good writer when he has the flair for writing and an eagerness to communicate with the reader.
