Write for your audience

Whenever you take up an online copywriting assignment and feel that you cannot come up with anything worth writing about always think about the audience. In fact this is a general rule of copywriting: whenever you are writing a copy write it for your audience no matter what your client says. Does this mean you need to go against the wishes of your client who eventually wants to pay you for your work? Not exactly.

Writing for your audience actually means writing for your client’s audience, the visitors to his or her website. Why on earth do they visit your client’s website? What are they looking for? What are they expecting? What sort of language do they understand and what sort of sensitivity they bring along when they visit your client’s website? The more you know the audience the better you write.

When working on an online copywriting assignment always think from the perspective of the end reader. If you need to strike a balance between your client’s desire and the aspirations of your readers than convey your client’s message as if you are helping the readers arrive at a decision. You need to make it clear to your readers that you understand their concerns and your copy is there to solve their problems and help them make decisions.
